* Friday, September 03, 2004 * I live in this world, and I know nuts about it all.
Why do I feel as if I know nothing about this world at all? But anyway, being a person IN this world, I won't have a clear perspective, would I? Then How? [singlish alert] Sometimes when I'm alone, my thoughts go haywire. The thing is that I start thinking, and can't stop myself from it. But another thing is that I've found out through experience I'm not in a position to arrive at most answers... Simply because there are some things you can't find out by sitting there and thinking. Or maybe my logic system just isn't good enough. Over the course of less than half a year, I've transformed from a rather extreme rationalist to a rather extreme empirist. And I've know through experience that extremes never work, because there are two sides to everything... Therefore... eh therefore what. The argument goes like this: Humans always do things for a reason. So they are always justified from their own perspective at that point of time, if not they will not do it, unless they are mentally impaired. And if they have a reason, it means that they are justified. Okay, common sense says that only good reasons are justifiable. Stealing a wallet just because you like it doesn't seem justified. But humans are not machines; we have emotions, desires, blah. So if we try to put ourselves into the thief's shoes, we should be able to understand/identify with his desire. If it is understandable; isn't it justified? Maybe understandable doesn't mean justified; but then, if not, what is? Something for the greater good of all mankind? But what is good? Can we go around stealing wallets so as to curb materialism/commercialism? What's right and what's wrong anyway? If everybody has their own perspective of right/wrong, it will just cause conflicts sooner or later. So maybe the definition of right should just be: making the majority of people happier. Wait. That sounds wrong. ARRRRGGGGH. What if making a group of people happier, means making one person sadder... how can we face the guilt... Would be really grateful if somebody kindly solve this riddle for me. Okay, change of topic. Been thinking of the issue of studying. Wondering if it's better to study or just let nature take its course. I seriously think that mugging is - . Studying should be for fun [okay, does this sound impossible?] Not necessarily fun, but at the least for the appreciation of nature or society, or for the gain of knowledge for pleasure. Why does it seem that our society only takes studying as a means to employment? [I shall call studying information intake here.] True that language and maths are important for survival, but I kind of think it stops here. Why would someone go study how cells work and how the universe functions to become some eh, clerk? Or some CEO who only has $$$ figures in his [balding?] head? Moral of the story. Well I'm tempted to say that either I haven't realized something, or humans are plain weird. * * * * * * * * *
